This site at the northernmost point of the Similan Islands group
is actually more often called North Point. But given that there are tons of rocks, too,
Rocky Point is an understandable alternate name. The site is located in the center of the north coast of
Koh Similan, off a rounded headland.
Characteristics:
Like the similar sites Deep Six and Christmas Point, the site consists of
piled boulders interspersed with a sandy bottom forming channels and swim-throughs. The boulders closest
to the shore rest in about 15 meters of water and rise to 5 meters of the surface. As the bottom drops
away, the boulders tumble down to depths of 35 meters. A long channel at a depth of 15 meters separates
one rock from the larger group.
Highlights:
Frequent visitors to this site are chevron barracuda, which can be seen
lingering near the tops of the rocks. Schools of batfish also hang out here. Keep on the lookout for
nudibranchs on the rocks themselves as well as octopus and reef fish among the rocks. In the deeper sandy
areas you may be lucky enough to spot a resting shark.
Marcia's notes:
Turtles are residents of the area as well, so on your safety stop, spend
some time in the shallows among the staghorn coral and you may find one there to keep you entertained for a
few minutes.
