Anemone Reef

  Anemone Reef
  • Overview:

The Thai name for this dive site is Hin Jom, which means “submerged rock”—a very apt description! The name in English is equally descriptive as the rock is carpeted in green and purple magnificent anemones.

  • Characteristics:

The rock is shaped somewhat like a crawling snail, with a big hump in the center, rising from the sea bed at around 20 meters to 5 meters from the surface, with deeper rocks at the “head” and the “tail.” It’s a small site best visited by spiraling up and around to a safety stop at the top.

  • Highlights:

The marine life is very much like that at nearby Shark Point, with vibrant colors, and many fish. The anemones that cover every inch of the rock in the shallow areas are a highlight, as are the anemone fish that inhabit them. Look also for schools of snapper, ranks of soldier fish under the table corals, clusters of lionfish hovering near the coral heads, and different types of moray eels in the nooks and crannies.

  • Marcia's notes:

This gorgeous dive site is a “must see” for all certified divers, but during full and new moons, be aware of the tidal currents, which can be quite strong.
